You wore your watch to bed and slept your usual amount. This morning the graph shows your overnight heart rate sitting a few beats above where it normally rests. Maybe it is 55 instead of 50. Maybe it is 62 instead of 57. The line jumped, and now you want to know why.

**When your sleeping heart rate is higher than normal, the usual causes are alcohol, a late or heavy meal, stress, a warm room, or the first stage of an illness. Almost none of these are emergencies.** Most spikes have a cause you can find in your own evening, and most fade on their own within one or two nights.

The signal worth watching is not a single night. It is a rise of 5 or more beats per minute that holds for two or more nights with no obvious cause. This guide covers what normal sleeping heart rate looks like, which causes show up most often, and how to read your own trend without panicking.

## The short answer

- A small wobble from night to night is normal. Sleep stages, body temperature, and dreams move your heart rate up and down all night.
- **5 or more beats per minute above your personal baseline, for 2 or more nights, is the meaningful signal.** Compare against your own average from the past few weeks, not a number from a chart.
- The most common causes, roughly in order: alcohol, late or heavy meals, illness onset, stress, a hot room, overtraining, medications, and caffeine.
- A sustained rise with no lifestyle cause can be the earliest sign you are getting sick. Your heart rate often climbs a day or two before you feel symptoms.
- One high night is not a diagnosis. If you feel fine and the number returns to baseline, let it go. If you have symptoms or the rise sticks around, talk to a physician.

## What is a normal sleeping heart rate?

Your sleeping heart rate is how many times your heart beats per minute while you sleep. It differs from your resting heart rate, which is a daytime number measured while you are awake and calm. Sleeping heart rate is usually lower, because deep sleep is when your nervous system leans hardest into recovery. For most healthy adults, sleeping heart rate lands somewhere in the 40s and 50s. People with strong cardiovascular fitness often sit lower, sometimes into the high 30s. Your lowest point usually arrives in the deep sleep stages of your first few hours, and the number drifts up toward morning.

Your Apple Watch records this automatically. Apple says the watch takes background heart rate readings with its infrared sensor while you are still. For sleep tracking you need to wear the watch to bed for at least an hour, and the Health app can show your heart rate laid against your time asleep in the sleep comparisons view. Apple also notes that occasional readings can come in abnormally high or low. One strange number on the graph is often the sensor, not your heart.

The honest answer to "what is normal" is your own trend. Population ranges are wide. A sleeping heart rate of 52 might be high for one person and a personal best for another. Take your average over the last two to four weeks of nights on the same device. That is your baseline.

## How many beats above baseline actually matters?

A couple of beats per minute is noise. Sleep position, a vivid dream, a warm blanket, and sensor error can each nudge the average by a beat or two. Nobody should lose sleep over a 51 instead of a 49.

The threshold that carries real information is about **5 beats per minute above your baseline, sustained for two or more nights.** One night at plus 5 might be a late dinner. Two or three nights at plus 5, with no change in your routine, is a pattern. That is when to look harder at causes like illness, overtraining, or sustained stress.

For long term context, research reviewed by the Munich study team below found that every 10 beats per minute of higher nighttime heart rate came with about a 10% higher risk of death from any cause and from heart disease. That sounds alarming, so read it carefully. That number describes people whose nighttime heart rate runs high for years. It does not describe one rough week. It is why a permanently elevated overnight heart rate is worth mentioning to a physician, and one spiked night is not.

## What causes overnight spikes?

Here are the most common causes, roughly ranked. Effect sizes come from studies and member data, not guesses.

## What does alcohol really do to overnight heart rate?

Alcohol is the single most reliable way to raise your sleeping heart rate, and the effect shows up at doses most people would call moderate.

A 2025 study from LMU University Hospital in Munich put smartwatches on 40 healthy adults for nine days. It ran three alcohol-free nights, three evenings of drinking, then three more alcohol-free nights. Women had 40 grams of alcohol per day and men had 60 grams, which is roughly three drinks for the women and four to five for the men. The drinks could be beer or wine, their choice.

The result was clean. Average nocturnal resting heart rate rose from 63.6 beats per minute at baseline to 66.6 during the drinking nights. That is a statistically significant 3 beats per minute rise. When the drinking stopped, heart rate returned almost to baseline the next night, landing at 64.9.

Two details in that study matter. First, the sleep stages barely changed. Total sleep time, deep sleep, light sleep, and awakenings all looked the same on drinking nights, yet nearly half the participants said their sleep quality dropped. The study authors suggest the elevated heart rate itself, a sign of a nervous system stuck partly in stress mode, is part of why a night can look fine on paper and feel awful in the morning. Second, the effect reversed fast once drinking stopped, which is reassuring if you drink only occasionally.

The Munich numbers match what Whoop sees across its whole member base. When members log even one drink, their heart rate variability drops by an average of 7 milliseconds and their resting heart rate rises by an average of 3 beats per minute. Their next-day Recovery score runs about 8% lower. And while heart rate normalizes quickly, Whoop found HRV can take four or five days to fully rebound after a single night of drinking.

Alcohol turns up your sympathetic nervous system, the fight-or-flight branch, and turns down your parasympathetic branch, the rest-and-digest one that normally owns your sleep. Your heart runs a little faster all night because your body is busy processing a toxin instead of repairing itself. It is not the type of drink that matters. Whoop's own FAQ puts it plainly: your body responds to the ethanol, not to whether it arrived as beer, wine, or spirits.

## When does a higher sleeping heart rate mean you are getting sick?

Your immune system raises your heart rate before you feel anything. When your body starts fighting a virus, your metabolism speeds up, and your overnight heart rate often climbs a day or two before the scratchy throat or runny nose arrives.

The pattern that suggests illness rather than lifestyle is a rise of 5 or more beats per minute, lasting two or three nights, with no change in alcohol, food, caffeine, or training. In practice, the rise often shows up before you notice a single symptom. Fatigue is another clue. If your overnight heart rate is up and you feel drained for no clear reason, your body may already be fighting something.

What to do about it is unglamorous. Take it easy. Hydrate. Sleep as much as you can. Skip the hard workout, because training through the start of an illness tends to make it worse. As the illness runs its course, your overnight heart rate drops back to baseline.

A few situations call for a physician rather than an app. Chest pain, a racing heart that will not settle, shortness of breath at rest, fainting, or a fever that will not break are not things to watch on a graph. Also see a physician if your sleeping heart rate stays elevated for more than a week with no explanation, or if it climbs steadily night after night. A wearable can tell you something changed. It cannot tell you what. That part belongs to a doctor.

## How do you bring it back down?

You fix the cause, not the number. The number is an output. Here is what works for each cause.

If alcohol is the driver, the fix is timing or skipping. The Munich study showed a measurable rise at moderate doses, and Whoop found the effect begins with a single drink. Moving your last drink earlier, so your body has hours to clear it before bed, shrinks the effect. Your heart rate will bounce back on the first alcohol-free night, but your HRV may need a few days.

If late meals are the driver, finish eating about three hours before bed. Terra Research analyzed wearable data from its users and found late dinners raised maximum sleeping heart rate by 1.54 beats per minute, held across the entire night. Late dinner nights also added about 7 minutes of awake time. Digestion pulls blood toward your gut and raises your temperature and metabolic rate, and your heart rate rides along.

If the room is the driver, cool it down. A warm bedroom forces your heart to work at dumping heat all night. A lighter duvet costs nothing to test.

For caffeine, set a cutoff around noon. Caffeine has a half-life measured in hours, so an afternoon coffee can still be active at bedtime. People clear it at very different speeds, so test your own cutoff.

For training, respect the trend. If your overnight heart rate is trending up across a hard block, take an easy day or two.

## FAQ

**Why is my sleeping heart rate higher after wine?**

Because of the ethanol, not the wine specifically. The Munich study let participants choose beer or wine and saw no clear difference between the two groups. Heart rate rose about 3 beats per minute at moderate doses either way. Whoop's member data agrees: the total amount of alcohol matters, and the type barely does. Wine has a reputation as the gentle option, but your heart rate graph cannot tell the difference.

**Is a sleeping heart rate of 80 bad?**

It depends on your baseline. 80 beats per minute is above the typical sleeping range for a healthy adult, so it is worth attention if it repeats. Ask what your own overnight average is, how long the 80 has lasted, and whether you feel unwell. Check your watch fit too, because Apple says occasional readings come in abnormally high. A single night of 80 with no symptoms is a cause to find, not a crisis. A pattern of 80 with chest pain, shortness of breath, or feeling unwell is a reason to see a physician promptly.

**Why would my sleeping heart rate be high with no alcohol and no big meal?**

Work down the rest of the list. Illness onset is the most common hidden cause, and it often arrives before symptoms. Then consider stress, a hot room, a hard training block, a new medication such as a decongestant, or afternoon caffeine. If none of those fit and the rise persists for a week, bring the data to a physician.

**How long does alcohol keep your sleeping heart rate up?**

For heart rate itself, about one night. In the Munich study, resting heart rate returned to near baseline on the first alcohol-free night. Heart rate variability is slower. Whoop found it can take four or five days to fully rebound after a single night of drinking, so your recovery scores can look ragged for longer than your heart rate does.

**Does a high sleeping heart rate mean I slept badly?**

Not directly. In the Munich study, drinking nights raised heart rate while the measured sleep stages stayed almost identical, yet people felt their sleep was worse. Elevated overnight heart rate is better read as a sign of physiological stress than as a sleep quality grade.
