Apple Watch Sleep Score: What's Good, What It Misses, and How to Use It

watchOS 26 added a native Sleep Score — duration, bedtime consistency, and interruptions. Here's what the number means, what a good score looks like, and what Apple's score still can't tell you.

If your Apple Watch runs watchOS 26, it now hands you a number every morning. The Sleep Score is a 0-to-100 grade for last night, built from three inputs: how long you slept (50 points), how consistent your bedtime was (30 points), and how often you woke up (20 points). A score of 81 or higher lands in Apple's "High" band, and 96-plus is "Very High."

Apple introduced the feature in September 2025 alongside the Apple Watch Series 11, but it is a watchOS 26 feature, not a Series 11 exclusive — any watch that runs watchOS 26 gets it, as MacRumors confirmed at launch.

Here is the thing the number does not tell you. The Sleep Score measures when and how long you slept. It says nothing about how well your body recovered overnight: no heart rate variability, no resting heart rate trend, no sleep-stage weighting. That distinction is the whole story, and it decides what the score can and cannot be used for.

The short answer

  • What it is: A 0-to-100 composite. Sleep duration is worth 50 points, bedtime consistency 30, and interruptions 20, per Apple's own documentation.
  • What's good: Apple publishes five bands. 81 to 95 is "High" and 96-plus is "Very High" — treat anything above 80 as a solid night. 61 to 80 is "OK," and below 60 is "Low" or "Very Low."
  • Where to find it: The Sleep app on your watch, the Smart Stack, a watch face complication, or the Health app on your iPhone under Sleep.
  • What it misses: Recovery context. No HRV, no resting heart rate, no stress or strain data — so a high score does not automatically mean your body is ready to train hard.

How Apple calculates the Sleep Score

The formula is unusually transparent for a wearable score. Apple's support page breaks it down exactly:

Two details are worth knowing. First, bedtime consistency is a rolling window: it compares last night's sleep onset against your previous 13 nights, so one late night drags the score for days afterward. Second, interruptions count both frequency and duration — a single 40-minute stretch awake costs more than three two-minute stirrings.

To see the score:

  1. Wear your watch to bed with Sleep tracking enabled and at least 30 percent battery.
  2. After you wake up, open the Sleep app on the watch. Your score appears once the night is analyzed.
  3. On your iPhone, open the Health app, tap Search, then Sleep, then tap your Sleep Score for the breakdown.

What counts as a good sleep score

Apple publishes the bands, which saves you from guessing:

In practice, read the bands this way. Anything 81 or above means you hit your duration, kept a regular bedtime, and slept through the night without long awake stretches — a genuinely good night by the score's definition. The 61-to-80 "OK" band usually means one of the three components broke down: a short night, a bedtime an hour later than usual, or a long awake period at 3 a.m. Below 60, two or more components failed.

A few practical notes. First, don't chase 100. The score rewards regularity, so a person with a perfectly boring sleep routine will outscore someone who sleeps well but irregularly — that is by design, not a flaw. Second, watch your trend, not any single night. One Very Low score after a red-eye flight is noise; a month of 55s is a signal worth acting on. Third, remember what the score grades. Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep per night, and the duration half of the score pushes you there, but the score cannot tell whether those hours left you restored.

How accurate is Apple Watch sleep tracking

The honest answer: good at telling sleep from wake, mediocre at telling sleep stages apart.

The most useful evidence is a 2022 study that validated six wearables against polysomnography — the gold-standard lab measurement — in 53 adults wearing an Apple Watch Series 6, Garmin, Polar, Oura Ring, WHOOP 3.0, and Somfit simultaneously. For the basic question of "asleep or awake," the Apple Watch agreed with polysomnography 88 percent of the time, in line with Garmin's 89 percent and WHOOP's 86 percent. For naming the specific stage — deep, core, REM — agreement dropped to 53 percent for Apple Watch, versus 60 percent for WHOOP and 61 percent for Oura. The researchers' conclusion applies to every device tested: wearables are valid for tracking the timing and duration of sleep, but stage classification still needs improvement.

What this means for you:

  • Sleep duration and bedtime are trustworthy. Those two components make up 80 of the 100 points, and both rest on sleep-versus-wake detection, which is the part the Apple Watch does well.
  • Interruptions are the weakest input. The Apple Watch's Cohen's kappa of 0.30 for sleep-wake classification — lower than WHOOP's 0.44 or Oura's 0.51 — reflects a tendency to miss brief awakenings or misclassify still wakefulness as sleep. If you lie awake without moving, the watch may score you as asleep.
  • The sleep stages graph is directional, not diagnostic. Use it to spot patterns over weeks, not to judge whether last night had "enough" deep sleep.

Versus WHOOP specifically: WHOOP edges out the Apple Watch on stage agreement and wake detection in that study, but the gap is smaller than the marketing suggests — 86 percent versus 88 percent on the sleep-wake question, and neither device is close to lab-grade on stages. The bigger difference is what each company does with the data, which is the next section.

What the Sleep Score misses

Apple made a deliberate choice: the Sleep Score grades sleep hygiene, not sleep physiology. It never looks at sleep-stage composition, and it completely ignores the overnight cardiovascular data the watch is collecting at the same time. That creates three gaps.

No HRV or resting heart rate. Overnight heart rate variability and resting heart rate are the two signals recovery science leans on hardest, because they show how your nervous system actually responded to the night. Two people can post identical 92s — one waking up with HRV above baseline and a low resting heart rate, the other with a suppressed HRV after two glasses of wine. The score cannot see the difference. The wine drinker's body worked all night; the score says both slept equally well.

No recovery context. The question most people actually want answered each morning is not "did I sleep?" but "what can my body handle today?" A recovery score answers that by combining sleep with overnight HRV and resting heart rate against your personal baseline. Apple's score stops at the bedroom door. If you're deciding between intervals and an easy day, a 94 tells you almost nothing useful.

No connection to strain or stress. Sleep debt only matters relative to load. A short night before a rest day costs little; the same night before a long run costs a lot. None of this makes the Sleep Score bad. It is a clean, honest measure of sleep regularity, and regularity genuinely matters. It is just answering a narrower question than most people assume when they see a grade out of 100.

How to improve your sleep score

The 50/30/20 weighting tells you exactly where the leverage is.

  1. Protect duration first. Half the score is time asleep. Set a sleep goal in the Health app and treat the bedtime as a real appointment, not a suggestion.
  2. Go to bed at the same time. Thirty points ride on matching your last 13 nights. A consistent 11 p.m. bedtime beats alternating between 10:30 and 1 a.m., even if total hours are identical.
  3. Build a wind-down routine. The Health app's Wind Down feature dims distractions before bed; whatever version you use, the 30 to 60 minutes before sleep set up the interruptions column. Alcohol close to bedtime is the classic score-killer — it fragments the second half of the night — and late caffeine does the same from the other direction.
  4. Keep the watch on and charged. Apple recommends at least 30 percent battery before bed and a snug-but-comfortable fit; a loose watch lets the accelerometer register normal sleep movement as tossing. Turn on Charging Reminders in the Watch app so you get a prompt before Wind Down. A dead watch means no data, and no data means no score.
  5. Judge trends over weeks. Bedtime consistency is a 13-night rolling window, so improvements take about two weeks to fully show up in the score. Don't judge a change after two nights.
