How to Check Your Recovery Score on Apple Watch (2026 Guide)

Your Apple Watch collects everything a recovery score needs — HRV, resting heart rate, sleep stages — but watchOS has no recovery score of its own. Here's how to see the raw data, and how to get a score that actually tells you what to do.

Here is the direct answer: your Apple Watch cannot show you a recovery score, because watchOS doesn't compute one. watchOS 26 added a native Sleep Score, and watchOS 11 added Training Load, but Apple has never shipped a recovery or readiness metric. What the Watch does is collect every input a recovery score needs — overnight heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep stages, respiratory rate, wrist temperature — and file it all away in the Health app. So you have two real options: dig out the raw numbers yourself and interpret them, or install an app that turns those same numbers into a score each morning. This guide covers both, step by step.

The short answer

  • There is no native recovery score on Apple Watch. watchOS 26 gives you a Sleep Score and Training Load, but nothing that answers "should I train today?"
  • The raw inputs already live in Apple Health. Heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, sleep stages, respiratory rate, and wrist temperature (Series 8 and later) are all collected automatically while you wear the Watch, especially overnight.

What watchOS 26 actually gives you

Before installing anything, it is worth knowing exactly what Apple already ships, because two of the pieces are genuinely useful.

Sleep Score

watchOS 26 added a Sleep Score, a 0-to-100 rating that appears each morning in the Sleep app on your Watch and in the Health app on your iPhone. Apple breaks it into three weighted components:

Scores classify from Very Low (0–40) up to Very High (96 and above). Sleep Score is a real step forward, but notice what is missing: it uses no physiological data. No HRV, no resting heart rate. Two people can earn identical Sleep Scores while their bodies are in completely different states — one rested, one fighting off a virus. Sleep duration is an input to recovery, not a measure of it.

Training Load

Training Load, added in watchOS 11, compares the intensity and duration of your workouts over the last 7 days against the previous 28 days, then classifies your current load from "well below" to "well above." You find it in the Activity app on your Watch. It answers "how much have I been doing?" — the strain side of the ledger. Apple pairs it with overnight vitals in the Vitals app, but it stops short of telling you whether your body has absorbed that load. That missing half is the recovery score.

Where to find each recovery metric in Apple Health

Everything a recovery algorithm needs is already on your iPhone. Here is where each piece lives, and what to look at.

Heart rate variability (HRV)

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Browse (bottom right), then tap Heart.
  3. Tap Heart Rate Variability.
  4. Switch the chart to W (week) or M (month) to see your trend rather than a single reading.

Resting heart rate

  1. In Health → Browse → Heart, tap Resting Heart Rate.
  2. Read the trend, not the day. A resting heart rate 5–10 beats above your normal average is one of the oldest recovery red flags in sports science — overtraining research has used exactly that signal for decades.

Sleep stages and duration

  1. Go to Health → Browse → Sleep.
  2. Tap the chart, then Show More Sleep Data → Stages to see time in Awake, REM, Core, and Deep sleep.
  3. Apple's sleep tracking documentation confirms this is also where your Sleep Score and its component breakdown appear in the morning.

Respiratory rate

  1. Go to Health → Browse → Respiratory → Respiratory Rate.
  2. The Watch records this automatically during sleep. A rising overnight respiratory rate, sustained over several nights, often tracks illness onset or accumulated strain.

Wrist temperature (Series 8 and later, all Ultra models)

  1. Go to Health → Browse → Body Measurements → Wrist Temperature.
  2. Apple reports this as a deviation from your own baseline rather than an absolute temperature. Sustained positive deviations are worth attention; the Vitals app on the Watch bundles it with your other overnight readings and flags outliers automatically.

Why the raw numbers don't tell you what to do

You now know where everything lives. The problem is that staring at these five charts still leaves the actual question — "should I train hard today?" — unanswered. Three reasons.

HRV in Health is the wrong metric, sampled at the wrong times. Apple Health reports HRV as SDNN, the standard deviation of beat intervals, a measure designed for 24-hour clinical recordings. Recovery science leans on RMSSD, a different calculation that better isolates the parasympathetic "rest and digest" signal. As HRV researcher Marco Altini explains in his piece on the Apple Watch and HRV, sporadic daytime readings are dominated by transitory noise — the coffee, the meeting, the walk up the stairs — and only a full-night average or a controlled first-thing-in-the-morning reading is reproducible enough to trend. SDNN and RMSSD are not interchangeable, so the number in Health will never match the number in a recovery app, and neither is broken.

Raw numbers have no baseline. A resting heart rate of 58 means nothing on its own. It only means something against your 58 from the last month, or your 52 from last month. The Health app shows charts; it does not tell you whether today's reading is a deviation worth acting on.

Nobody adds it up. Recovery is a composite judgment: overnight HRV versus baseline, resting heart rate versus baseline, sleep duration and quality, sometimes temperature and respiratory rate, weighed together. Doing that synthesis mentally, across five Health screens, every morning, is exactly the work a score exists to eliminate. The Watch collects the inputs. It does not compute the answer.

Recovery apps all do roughly the same thing: read your overnight HRV (recomputed as RMSSD), lowest resting heart rate, and sleep from Apple Health, compare each against your multi-week personal baseline, and deliver one morning number with a training recommendation.
