Apple Watch Readiness: Only Series 12 and Ultra 4 Have It
The Readiness app in watchOS 27 runs only on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. Here's what the score measures, why the cutoff is hardware, and what it costs a Series 11 owner to get in.

watchOS 27 arrives on September 14. It works on the Apple Watch Series 9 and newer. But the new Readiness app does not. Apple lists Readiness on only two watches: the Series 12 and the Ultra 4. If you own a Series 11 or anything older, no update will add it. Even the readiness view in the new iPhone Health app needs a Series 12 or Ultra 4 on your wrist.
Here is what the score measures, why older watches are left out, and what it costs to get one that has it.
The short answer
- Readiness only works on two watches. watchOS 27 runs on Series 9 and later, SE 3, and Ultra 2 and later. The Readiness app ships only on the Series 12 and Ultra 4.
- The score runs from 0 to 10. It blends your activity, training load, vitals, and sleep into one morning number. The labels include Pace Yourself and Ready.
- The cutoff is hardware. Readiness runs on the new heart sensors and the S11 chip. These record heart rate every 5 seconds and HRV up to 24 times more often than before.
- Getting in costs at least $399 for a Series 12, or $799 for an Ultra 4. No software update adds it.
- You do not need new hardware for a recovery score. Your current watch already records the signals. Apps like Ness turn them into a score on your phone.
Which watches get what in watchOS 27
| Feature | Series 9-11, SE 3, Ultra 2-3 | Series 12 / Ultra 4 |
|---|---|---|
| watchOS 27 | Yes | Yes |
| New Health app on iPhone (iOS 27) | Yes, needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone | Yes |
| Readiness app on the watch | No | Yes |
| New sensor system (heart rate every 5 seconds, more HRV) | No | Yes |
| ECG, sleep score, vitals | Yes | Yes |
Apple's own comparison page puts the Readiness app and the new sensor system on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 rows. And nowhere else. Apple's catch-all line covers the rest: "not all features are available on all devices."
What the Readiness score actually is
Readiness is a score from 0 to 10. It answers one question: how ready is your body for a hard day? Apple says it blends four things. Your recent activity. Your training load. Your vitals. And your sleep score. The number updates through the day instead of freezing when you wake up. It also shows which factors moved it. So a low score from short sleep reads differently than one from a hard training week.
The labels map to four states: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, and Go For It. Apple built the score using its own Heart and Movement Study, with its own scientists and doctors. That is a clearer paper trail than most readiness scores on the market. But it is not a medical test. One low morning is noise. The trend over weeks is what matters.
Why older watches are left out
The reason is the new sensor package. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 carry new heart sensors. Bigger green lights that check heart rate every 5 seconds. A new ring of light sensors. And more electrode area for ECG. Readiness leans on that fast data stream. It compares your overnight signals against your own baseline, using HRV samples taken up to 24 times more often than older watches.
One honest caveat. Apple ties Readiness to the new sensors in its marketing. But it has never said old sensors physically cannot run it. Selling new watches may matter as much as the engineering. Either way, the result is the same. No update brings Readiness to a Series 11.
What a Series 11 owner can do
Three options, from most to least expensive:
- Upgrade. The Series 12 starts at $399 and the Ultra 4 at $799. Monthly plans start at $11.99 and $24.99 over 24 months. Trade-in lowers the price. Pre-orders opened September 9. Stores get stock September 18.
- Wait. If Readiness is the only thing you want, wait one hardware cycle. Apple Watch features trickle down to older models over time.
- Use what you already have. Your watch already records the raw signals. Overnight heart rate, HRV, breathing rate, and sleep. That is all a readiness-style score needs.
The third option deserves a closer look. Ness computes a Recovery score every morning from the signals your current watch already records. It runs on your phone, not in the cloud. It also sets a Strain Target for the day. The score is not Apple's Readiness, and it does not sample as often as the new sensor system. But it answers the same question: train hard today, or take it easy? And it does not cost $399. Ness is $12.99 per month or $79.99 per year on the App Store.
How Readiness fits the new Health app
The redesigned Health app comes with iOS 27 in late 2026, US English first. It adds an Insights tab. That tab pulls together heart, sleep, readiness, fitness, vitals, and cycle tracking. With a Series 12 or Ultra 4, your readiness score shows up there and in the Fitness app. Health Age is a different metric. It lives in the new Longevity tab and uses resting heart rate, VO2 max, sleep, and HRV. We cover it in our Apple Health Age explainer.
FAQ
Does the Apple Watch SE 3 get Readiness? It is not on Apple's list. The SE line usually misses the premium health features. Apple's "not all features" line covers it.
Is Readiness the same as a recovery score? They answer the same question from similar inputs. Recovery scores from other apps lean harder on overnight HRV and resting heart rate. Readiness adds your activity and training load from Apple's side.
This is not medical advice. Readiness and recovery scores are training tools, not medical tests. If you have symptoms or a health condition, see a doctor.
